What to Do Right Now During an ICE Raid

If ICE is at your door or workplace, follow these steps to protect your rights:

DO NOT open the door

Ask them to slide the warrant under the door. An "ICE warrant" or "administrative warrant" is NOT the same as a judicial warrant. You do not have to let them in without a judge's signature.

DO NOT You have the right to remain silent

Do NOT answer questions about where you were born, your immigration status, or how you entered the country. Say clearly: "I am exercising my right to remain silent. I want to speak to my lawyer."

DO NOT sign anything

ICE may pressure you to sign papers. Do not sign anything without speaking to a lawyer first. This includes "Voluntary Departure" forms.

DO NOT run or physically resist

Stay calm. If they force entry or arrest you anyway, do not resist physically. This can lead to criminal charges and hurt your immigration case.

How We Protect Your Rights

Immediate Legal Intervention

The moment you contact us during a raid, we take action. If you're being questioned, we get on the phone with ICE agents to assert your right to counsel. If you're arrested, we immediately begin detention defense. Speed matters — we don't wait.

Constitutional Rights Protection

ICE must follow the Constitution. If they violated your Fourth Amendment rights (illegal search), your Fifth Amendment rights (forced self-incrimination), or conducted the raid based on racial profiling, we document everything and use it to fight your case in court.

Workplace Raid Defense

If ICE raided your workplace, you have rights. We represent employees who were arrested, help family members locate detained workers, and fight for bond hearings. We also work with employers (when appropriate) to protect workers' rights during enforcement actions.

Community Education & Preparedness

We help families create "raid preparedness plans" — know-your-rights cards, emergency contact lists, and family safety plans. If you have children, we help you document guardianship arrangements in case of arrest. Prevention and preparation save lives.

Real Results From Families We've Helped

“ICE came to my house at 6am. I didn’t open the door. I called Attorney Pierre immediately and he talked me through everything. They eventually left. He helped me apply for asylum and now I have a work permit. If I had opened that door, I’d be deported.”

Santos L.

Newark, NJ
“ICE raided the restaurant where I worked. They arrested 15 people including me. Attorney Pierre came to the detention center the same day. He got me released on bond in one week and we’re fighting my case. My coworkers who didn’t have a lawyer are still detained.”

Carmen R.

Paterson, NJ
“I was so scared when ICE knocked on my door. I WhatsApped this office and they answered in 5 minutes — at 7am on a Saturday. They told me exactly what to say and what not to do. ICE left without arresting me. This team saved my life.”

Your Questions Answered

No. Unless they have a warrant signed by a judge (not an ICE administrative warrant), you do not have to open the door. Ask them to slide the warrant under the door so you can see it. If it’s only signed by an ICE officer or DHS official, it’s not a judicial warrant.
Do not physically resist. Stay calm, remain silent, and ask for a lawyer. If they violated your rights by entering without a proper warrant, we use that in your defense. Document everything you can remember and contact us immediately.
Yes. ICE can conduct workplace raids and arrest employees they believe are undocumented. However, you still have the right to remain silent and the right to a lawyer. Do not answer questions about your status or sign anything.
Remain silent and ask for a lawyer immediately. Do not answer any questions. Have a family member contact us right away. We will locate you in detention, visit you as soon as possible, and begin fighting for your release and defending against deportation.
Yes. We provide these cards to our clients and community members. They explain your rights in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Haitian Creole. Carry one at all times. If ICE approaches you, hand them the card and remain silent.
This is critical. Before any raid happens, you should have a safety plan — designate a guardian, have their contact information written down, and make sure your children know what to do. If you’re arrested, tell us immediately about your children so we can help ensure their safety.

Don't Wait — Protect Your Family Now

Do not speak to ICE until we are on the line. What you do in the first 24 hours matters.
